There’s something magical about preserving a beautiful flower forever. Flower pressing is a simple, screen-free activity that invites children (and adults!) to slow down, notice nature, and create something lasting and lovely. Whether you’re gathering wildflowers on a walk, saving a special bloom from a bouquet, or exploring your garden, pressing flowers is a wonderful hands-on learning experience.

What Is Flower Pressing?

Flower pressing is the process of flattening and drying flowers to preserve their color and shape. It dates back centuries and has been used in everything from Victorian art to science journals. For children, it’s a calming activity that encourages observation, fine motor skills, and creativity.

How to Press Flowers: A Simple Guide

You don’t need fancy tools to get started! Here’s how:

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Fresh flowers or leaves (not too thick)
  • Paper (blotting paper, parchment, or coffee filters)
  • Heavy books or a flower press
  • Scissors (I like these garden shears)
  • Patience!

However, if you’re looking for something to simplify the process, my mother-in-law got us these flower presses when we started doing it regularly.

Steps:

  1. Pick the Right Flowers: Choose blooms that are naturally flat or can be trimmed easily. Avoid thick or juicy ones as they can mold!
  2. Blot Gently: If the flowers are moist, blot them dry with a paper towel.
  3. Arrange Carefully: Place flowers between two sheets of paper. Make sure petals aren’t overlapping unless you want them to fuse.
  4. Press & Wait: Place the paper inside a heavy book or flower press. Add extra books on top for pressure. Leave them undisturbed for 1 – 2 weeks.
  5. Check & Use: Once dry and crisp, your pressed flowers are ready for display!

Tips & Tricks for the Best Results

  • Pick in the morning after the dew has dried but before the heat of the day.
  • Trim stems close to the base of the bloom.
  • Use multiple layers of paper to avoid staining books.
  • Label your flower sheets if collecting different species.

Creative Project Ideas with Pressed Flowers

Now for the fun part: what to do with your preserved petals!

1. Pressed Flower Bookmarks

Laminate or glue flowers onto cardstock, punch a hole, and add ribbon for a handmade gift or reading accessory.

2. Nature Journal Pages

Let kids glue pressed flowers into their nature journals and label them with names, dates, and observations. This is a great way to encourage descriptive wording!

3. Framed Art

Arrange flowers into a design or collage and frame it. Simple wooden frames make beautiful natural art for any room. My favorite pressed flower project I’ve done is a pressed bouquet from my daughter’s first dance recital. I love that I’m reminded of the memory every time I see them hung up with her little ballet shoes!

4. Greeting Cards

Use glue sticks or Mod Podge to attach pressed flowers to blank cards. A personal touch that’s perfect for birthdays, thank-yous, or just because. My grandmother loves receiving special notes in the mail from her great grandchildren!

5. Suncatchers

Sandwich flowers between contact paper or laminate sheets, cut into shapes, and hang in a sunny window for a colorful natural display.

6. Candle Decor

Wrap pressed flowers around glass votives using Mod Podge, then add a battery-operated tea light for a floral glow. We use them outside for community evening concerts, nightlights and family gatherings like Thanksgiving.

 Why Kids Love It

Flower pressing is a beautiful blend of science, art, and sensory exploration. Kids love watching flowers transform and seeing how nature becomes art. My daughter started appreciating flower pressing when we did it as an art project for school. The project was an outline of the state map, filled with pressed red clovers (they’re the state flower!). Flower pressing is a quiet, mindful hobby that brings nature indoors and encourages appreciation for even the tiniest of blooms.

Whether you’re preserving a memory, celebrating the season, or simply enjoying the natural world, flower pressing is a timeless activity full of beauty and creativity. Try it this weekend – you’ll be surprised at just how joyful it is to flatten a flower and open up a whole world of imagination.
